Edward Gorey Centennial Postage Stamp Campaign

Would you like to see Edward Gorey on a postage stamp?

February 22, 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of Edward Gorey’s birth, and we would like to see it celebrated with a U.S. postage stamp recognizing him as one of America’s most inventive and influential cultural figures. And, we need your help!

Please join the Edward Gorey Charitable Trust and our friends at the Edward Gorey House in our joint campaign for a centennial 2025 Edward Gorey postage stamp. To make this stamp a reality, please consider sending a letter of nomination to the United States Postal Service. To petition USPS for a stamp, we all must send in actual letters on paper at least three years in advance of prospective publication.

Your nomination must contain “pertinent historical information and important dates associated with the subject” and must be sent to the following address:

Stamp Development

Attn: Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee

475 L’Enfant Plaza SW, Room 3300

Washington, DC 20260-3501

At this stage of a stamp proposal, USPS does not accept ideas for specific images or designs, just subjects. USPS and the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee have set a list of criteria for stamp subject selection HERE.

In your brief letter, please mention a few of the most significant ways you believe Edward Gorey contributed to American life and culture. For help with ideas and biographical facts, here are a few resources online:

Whatever you decide to write, please include the years of Mr. Gorey’s birth and death (1925 and 2000), the fact that 2025 is the centenary of his birth, and examples of his contributions in at least two of the following categories:

  • Writing
  • Fine art
  • Book illustration
  • Book cover design
  • Theatrical design (set and costume)
  • Mail art
  • Fashion
  • Support of animal welfare causes (continuing today through the Edward Gorey Charitable Trust)

There are many other kinds of ways Mr. Gorey made an impact on American life in his wide-ranging career, so please don’t hesitate to mention whatever else you think makes him most deserving of the enduring honor of a U.S. stamp.

We would love for you to share an image or part of the text of your letter; to do so, please write to us at or DM us at @edwardgoreytrust on Instagram and Facebook – we will be posting our favorites on Instagram and Facebook as they come in!

To keep apprised of our progress on this campaign and other news, please be sure to join our mailing list HERE.

Please send your letter to USPS by March 31, and please encourage your fellow Gorey fans to do the same. Thank you in advance!
