Edward Gorey’s business card, circa 1960.

Edward Gorey was a prolific writer, artist, and designer whose unusual body of work has been called “humorously unsettling,” “stylish and inventive,” “startling,” and “sublime.” Over the course of his 50-year career, he grew from cult favorite among fellow artists and writers to international stature and acclaim, influencing film, fiction, fashion, and various other fields of contemporary popular culture. His stories, poems, and drawings, together with his eccentric life and distinctive personal style, are today the subjects of numerous books, articles, and museum exhibitions.

The Edward Gorey Charitable Trust was established by Mr. Gorey in his will to manage his intellectual property and benefit animal welfare. Since Mr. Gorey’s death in 2000, the Trust has worked towards preserving and expanding his legacy as one of the 20th century’s most interesting and inventive figures.

I have a dumb theory that a creative piece of art is only interesting if it purports to be about something and is really about something else.

For some reason my mission in life is to make everybody as uneasy as possible, because that’s what the world is like.

Sunny, funny nonsense for children – oh how boring, boring, boring. As Schubert said, there is no happy music.

I write about everyday life.

Please help us support Edward Gorey’s favorite animal welfare causes while preserving and sharing his creative legacy.
