In continuing celebration of the 100th anniversary of Edward Gorey’s birth, the Edward Gorey Charitable Trust is pleased to present a special limited-edition commemorative print. Skeleton Dance is a triptych featuring three sketches discovered in Mr. Gorey’s papers at the beginning of a major excavation project six years ago. The drawings feature the titular skeleton toasting and dancing with a Jazz Age woman in evening dress. Unlike the meticulously finished art for which Mr. Gorey is best known, these drawings remain in the fluid, energetic style of his greatest sketches, revealing a dynamic dimension of his work rarely seen in print.
To make this art available to the public for the first time, the Trust has commissioned Cœur Noir Specialty Printers of Brooklyn, New York, to present the three sketches side-by-side in a hand-pulled letterpress print. The edition is printed on Somerset Velvet White 300gsm fine art paper and is issued with a custom-cut 60 pt. archival conservation board mat.
Size of print: 6 x 15 inches.
This is the Trust’s first-ever “timed edition” print. Orders will open from June 20th for 15 days, closing on July 4th. The total number of prints ordered during this window will determine the final edition size of the Skeleton Dance triptych. Once the order period ends, our partners at Cœur Noir will begin production. Each print will be delivered in a custom-designed box, stamped with the official Gorey 100 logo.
All proceeds support the Trust’s mission to benefit animal welfare organizations and preserve Mr. Gorey’s creative legacy.
