One of Edward Gorey’s finest – and most enigmatic – works, The West Wing is an opus of Things Left Unsaid. The reader navigates the Wing unchaperoned by a single line of text, passing from one room to the next with an increasing sense of unease. In one alcove, a lit candle hovers in midair; in the next, a dead body – or is he just asleep? – lies prone on the floor. Around a corner, the legs of an unidentified piece of furniture jut like broken bones; one more step forward, and the paper begins to peel itself from the wall.
